Had you considered the impact of Media Appearances at Race Weekends? Probably You will lose time, but hopefully avoid a crash / lock up. When he warns his driver about overheated tyre, you have to set pace command to normal / light or/and use the 'drive in clear air' order. And watch carefully your race engineer's feedback. Yes, you can't push your driver constantly.
I don't think a top driver should find it that tough. I had some spare fuel, but I ran Red maybe 1/3 of the race, maybe less. After the new patch, I had to pay way more attention to tyre wear so I spent hardly any time at all on Orange/Aggressive. It's gotten ridiculous, if the latest patch added to the problem I don't know, but I have had only 1 race from 6 this season without at least one of my cars spinning off and wrecking a wing, or running wide multiple times.
